Externalization

Externalization refers to the process whereby certain intensive Engine activities are off loaded to one or more remote machines with the aim of improving performance and load time. These activities include Indexing, Link Building and Crosstab processing, all of which are cross-compilable as both 32 bit and 64 bit.

Indexing

All data types except for Memo text can be indexed externally. This will be done automatically and in parallel during the load of a table. Note that Engine is still subject to the Max Indexes setting, which by default restricts the number of external index processes to two.

Crosstabs

The externalization of crosstabs allows more resources to be consumed when calculating crosstabs by allowing multiple processes to be run that each have access to 2GB of memory.

Link Building

Building links is a memory intensive process which on larger systems often needs to be completed using multiple passes. Externalizing the building of generic to generic links allows the process to run in a 64 bit process, thus increasing the chances of a link executing in a single pass.
