Auto Numeric Band

Use the Auto Numeric Band to create a Column comprising groups of numerical data. You do this by copying a numeric Column and remapping the values into more meaningful ranges, and by setting the minimum and maximum values you can limit your column to the range that you are interested in.

The tool is similar to the Numeric Band tool, but provides additional automated options.

Procedure

  1. Drag the Auto Numeric band tool to the Workspace.
  2. Choose the join operator.
  3. Click the icon to the right of the Numeric Banding field.
    • Column Name: Enter a name for the new banded column.
    • Source Column: Select the numeric column that will provide the basis of your numeric band.
    • Mode: There are a number of options available depending on the type of band that you want to create:
    • PassThrough: There are no bands with this option. Every value will be displayed with the relevant count. The results can be displayed as a Range, Pie Chart or Table.
    • Interval: This option will display counts in bands, the scope of which can be configured by the user. Entering an interval of ten will create bands of ten values, for example 1-10; 11-20 and so on. Entering minimum and maximum values will limit the range displayed, although records above and below the entered range will be displayed as their own segments. Note that if you use minimum and maximum values they will need to correlate with the band interval or there may be a gap at the end of the range that is a band interval of 10 and a maximum value of 35 may mean that the records in the 30-35 range are not accounted for. The results can be displayed as a Pie Chart or Table. Checking the Shorten long numbers box will display numbers with a 'K' to represent a thousand i.e. 50K instead of 50,000.
    • BandCount: This is similar to Interval but allows you to specify the exact number of bands, and then the band interval will be set automatically and will not necessarily be consistent.
    • Quantile: Enter the required number of bands and these will be created so that each band has exactly the same number of records in it. The scope of each band will be different depending on the distribution of record values across the range. The band values are rounded for display purposes.
